DHL, the world’s leading international express servicesprovider,recently opened a new service center facility inSunnyvale,California, to better serve the international shippingneeds andgrowth from the many start-up and global technologycompanies in theregion.
“Silicon Valley is a spectacular market that continues toflourishand have an impact on many different industries,” saidJohn Fox, VPand General Manager of the Western U.S. for DHLExpress. “DHL wasfounded in San Francisco nearly 50 years ago, andwe are proud tohave the opportunity to continue investing andgrowing in the areawhere it all started.”
The new $12 million, 39,000-s facility features asorting capacityof 3,000 packages per hour. Its central locationat 1105 Kern Avenuein Sunnyvale will provide customers in the WestSan Jose, SantaCruz, Mountain View and Sunnyvale areas with fasterdelivery timesby up to one hour. In addition, customers in theseareas will beable to take advantage of later shipment pickupcutoff times.
DHL now has four service centers in the Bay Area –Fremont,Oakland, San Francisco and now Sunnyvale.
As part of the company’s global initiative to reduce itscarbonfootprint, DHL is investing $3.5 million to add 30 electricvehiclesto its 40-vehicle fleet in Sunnyvale. The newhigh-efficiencyelectric vehicles are part of the Deutsche Post DHLGoGreen programto reduce CO2 emissions by 30 percent by the year2020.
DHL recently increased its Sunnyvale staff by 33%. Thecompanycurrently employs 500 Bay Area operational staff,includingcouriers, agents, and management.
